Why should everyone do marriage registration immediately after marriage in India?

Marriage Certificate is an important document. We all agree with that. It is given when a couple registers their marriage officially. But presently, very few couples register their marriage. And these few register only when there is a need to produce a marriage certificate somewhere for official work.

The practice of registering marriage only when the need for a certificate arises has some serious side effects.

The most important side effect is that Marriage registration usually takes 15–20 days in every state. So when there is a need to produce a marriage certificate somewhere for official work, the certificate will not be available to them immediately. They will have to wait 15–20 days for the certificate, which means their important work will get delayed by 15–20 days.

Other than this, there are more issues that a couple could face if they do not register their marriage as soon as possible after marriage. Some of them are as follows:

• Eligibility conditions could change with time for marriage registration: Laws and rules keep changing. They are not constant. Couples who are eligible today for marriage registration may become ineligible with the passage of time.

• Increase in formalities: Some formalities could increase as marriage gets older. Which adds an additional burden on registrants. It also gives officials a chance to make excuses, which makes the registration difficult.

• Relocation to another state: You could relocate to some other state where it is not possible to register marriage as per the rules of that state. So with time, you will become ineligible for marriage registration in your original state.

• Witness Unavailability: Witnesses could also become unavailable after a certain time. Either due to their death or relocation.

• Death of A Partner: Your partner could pass due to unforeseen circumstances. It has happened in many cases where a marriage certificate was demanded after the death of one partner to complete the formalities related to pension.

• Separation of couples: You both could get legally separated. In many cases, the need for a marriage certificate arises after their divorce.

So if you get late in registering your marriage, you could also face these issues. So it is always better to register the marriage as soon as possible. If you have not registered your marriage, then do it today.
